A coastal town on the east coast of Puerto Rico, Luquillo is known for its sandy beaches and food kiosks.

Getting to Luquillo

If you have a rental car, you can drive to Luquillo from San Juan. It’s just about 34 miles each way, and takes about 50 minutes in normal traffic.

With a rented car, you can drive from San Juan to the ferry terminal at Ceiba. The distance is just under 47 miles, and the drive takes about an hour and 10 minutes in normal traffic.

At Ceiba, take the ferry to Culebra. The ride is about 45 minutes. You’ll want to try for the 9 a.m. ferry departure, to have plenty of time to explore.

If you want to visit on your own without a car, you’ll need to find an Uber or a taxi from San Juan to the ferry terminal in Ceiba, and back.

A guided tour is a great way to visit Culebra. We loved this popular tour, which included a buffet lunch (great spread!) and snorkeling gear, so all we had to do was show up and enjoy!

The catamaran tour leaves from Fajardo and transport from San Juan hotels is an option you can add if you don’t want to drive.

4. Icacos

Icacos Island, also known as Cayo Icacos, is a tiny little tropical paradise, an uninhabited island off the northeast corner of Puerto Rico.

Just 1.5 miles off the coast of the main island, Icacos makes for an ideal day trip destination from San Juan.

Getting to Icacos

To visit on your own, you have to take a water taxi from Fajardo. Taxis depart throughout the day, but you’ll want to take one that leaves early in the day to maximize your time on Icacos. The ride is just 15 minutes each way.

With a car, you can drive from San Juan to Fajardo in about an hour in normal traffic.

Guided catamaran tours to Icacos are very popular, because you can travel light and have the amenities to enjoy the cay for a few hours.

5. Vieques

Vieques is the largest island in the Puerto Rican archipelago after the main island, and you can spend much longer than a day in Vieques.

At Ceiba, take the ferry to Vieques. The ride is about 30 minutes, and you can park your car at the ferry terminal.

If you want to visit on your own by ferry without a car, you’ll need to find an Uber or a taxi from San Juan to the ferry terminal in Ceiba, and back.

6. Ponce

Ponce, Puerto Rico’s second city, nicknamed “the Pearl of the South,” is a joy to visit, with a walkable downtown featuring colorful Colonial facades.

Also in downtown Ponce, be sure to stop by the Parque de Bombas, a historic fire station with a striking red exterior, and the Ponce Cathedral.

You will find both landmarks along the Plaza de las Delicias, the town’s main square, along with the Fuente de los Leones, a majestic fountain surrounded by statues of lions. There are lots of cafes and restaurants around the square as well.

The Museo de Arte de Ponce is a must-visit for art lovers. The museum is home to an impressive collection of both Puerto Rican and European art.

Overlooking the downtown area of Ponce, the Museo Castillo Serralles makes for a fascinating tour. The mansion was built by the owners of Don Q Rum and has gorgeous gardens and an outdoor pool.

Also nearby is the 100-foot-tall Cruceta del Vigรญa, with a skybridge that offers panoramic views, and a small Japanese Garden.

Offshore, enjoy views of Caja de Muertos, a small island that is a nature preserve, with a lighthouse.

Getting to Ponce

Have a rental car? It’s easy to drive to Ponce from San Juan, and the drive is scenic too!

Ponce is a little over 68 miles from San Juan, and, in normal traffic, the drive takes about one hour and 30 minutes.

7. Fajardo

Located on the east coast of Puerto Rico, Fajardo is home to one of the three bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico and it’s close enough to San Juan that you can do an evening tour before heading back to the city.

Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, home to not just the bioluminescent lagoon but also many mangrove forests, dry forests, beaches, and a historic lighthouse, offers tours led by naturalists.

Seven Seas Beach, with its calm waters, is a great option for snorkeling or kayaking. The beach is lined with trees that offers shade, and there are kiosks where you can buy food and drink.

If you are up for some hiking, walk from Seven Seas Beach to Playa Colora, a red sand beach that’s a great photo spot! The walk takes about 25 minutes.

El Faro de Fajardo is one of the oldest lighthouses in Puerto Rico. It sits on a cliff and offers stunning views of the ocean.

The Cayos De La Cordillera Nature Reserve is a group of small islands just off the coast of Fajardo, and you can join a local boat tour to visit and snorkel. The waters around the islands are home to a variety of marine life.

8. Cabo Rojo

Among the must-visit attractions in Cabo Rojo are its famed salt flats, which feature reddish pink water and give the place its name.

At the Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge, you can hike scenic trails of varying lengths. Birdwatchers should bring their binoculars!

At the Los Morrillos Lighthouse, you can climb up to the observation deck for panoramic views over the ocean and the coastline. The historic lighthouse was the second lighthouse on Puerto Rico built by the Spanish.

Getting to Cabo Rojo

If you have a car, you can drive from San Juan along the southern coast of Puerto Rico to Cabo Rojo.

The distance from San Juan to Cabo Rojo is about 106 miles, and should take about 2 hours in normal traffic.

Start your day trip early, because there’s a lot to see and do in Cabo Rojo and you’ll want beach time as well.

9. Arecibo

The Cueva del Indio is significant as a site that preserves indigenous Taรญno culture, with dozens of petroglyphs on the limestone walls. The hike to the cave is scenic, with views of the ocean and rock formations.

The Arecibo Lighthouse is a must-visit landmark. Built by the Spanish government in 1898, the lighthouse is located in a cultural park that includes replicas of Spanish ships and a small water park.

Chorros La Planta features the waters of the Tanama River, with pools and waterfalls, and the Cambalache State Forest offers several hiking trails.

A short distance away is Lago dos Bocas, where you can enjoy a cruise, and La Poza del Obispo is a lovely cove with a swimming beach.

Arecibo is located about 51 miles from San Juan, along the northern coast of Puerto Rico.

If you have a a car, you can drive from San Juan to Arecibo in about one hour in normal traffic.

10. Rรญo Camuy Cave Park

The Rio Camuy is one of the largest underground rivers in the world, and over time it has carved out an extensive network of limestone caves and passages in the northwest part of Puerto Rico.

The caves extend through the towns of Camuy, Hatillo, and Lares, with the main entrance at Quebrada in Camuy.

If you like exploring natural wonders, the Rio Camuy Cave Park is a fun trip from San Juan to add to your Puerto Rico itinerary, and can be combined with Arecibo for a full day trip.

Only a small part of the huge network is currently open to the public, and you have a join a guided tour to explore.

Wear closed-toed shoes with good traction, bring a strong flashlight if you want to appreciate details (the caves are not currently lit), and use the handrails to avoid slip-and-fall events.

The attractions in the complex you can usually view are the massive Cueva Clara de Empalme (the Clara Cave), the Spiral Sinkhole, and the Sumidero Tres Pueblos, another giant sinkhole.

The cave system is home to several types of bats and spiders, as well as a number of varieties of flora.

Note that there is a paved but steep path that leads down to the caves and back up to the parking area. There used to be a trolley but no longer.
