There are many city beaches in San Juan from which to pick.
If you base in Condado, white sand Condado Beach is perfect for sunbathing or strolling. The waves are strong though, with rip currents, so it’s not the ideal swimming beach.

Playita del Condado, a small golden sand beach protected by rocks, is a better bet for swimming, especially if you are traveling with kids.
The beaches at Isla Verde, El Alambique, Balneario de Carolina, and Pine Grove, all offer golden sands and turquoise waters, with lots of room. Rentals are easy and dining is nearby.
๐ฅ๏ธ Private All-Inclusive East Coast Keys Tour and Snorkel Experience Embark on a private boat tour exploring the East Coast Keys, complete with snorkeling and gourmet refreshments. Guests commend the personalized service and stunning locales.
Close to Old San Juan, El Escambron Beach is small, but offers clean golden sand and usually calm waters.
Following your beach time, take the ferry to the Casa Bacardi Rum Factory in Catano. The ferry departs from Pier 2 in Old San Juan. In Catano, you’ll need to take a short taxi ride to the factory.
At the factory, you have a choice of three fun experiences: the legacy tour, a mixology class, or a rum tasting experience. Book your spots ahead of time, as they are very popular!
Depending on the time you have before dinner, a sunset sail or boat tour of San Juan Bay is a relaxing way to cap off your first day on the island.

If you prefer a sunset water activity in Condado, consider this night kayak excursion on the Condado Lagoon. It’s great if you are traveling with kids!
End your first day in Puerto Rico with a special meal in Condado. Head to Mario Pagan Restaurant for elegant dishes with a Puerto Rican twist, or to 1919 Restaurant for flavorful dishes using local ingredients.
๐ข Dive into the clear waters off San Juan to snorkel alongside sea turtles and vibrant marine life. This guided tour includes underwater videos, capturing your unforgettable encounters.
Day 2 of Your Puerto Rico Itinerary: Culture, History, and Nightlife in San Juan
While you could easily spend more time enjoying the historic quarter of the Puerto Rican capital, one day in Old San Juan will allow you to take in the highlights and enjoy the fun ambience.
Morning
Old San Juan is the perfect place to begin exploring Puerto Rico in earnest.
With more than 500 years of history and a maze of alleys flanked by colorful Colonial buildings, Old San Juan offers exciting activities both by day and by night.
First thing in the morning, walk over to Calle de la Fortaleza to snap photos.
The portion of the street closest to the governor’s mansion, closed to vehicular traffic, is usually decorated, sometimes with colorful umbrellas, but sometimes with kites, or the Puerto Rican flag, or other colorful decor.

During the day it’s very crowded, so morning is your best bet for photos.
If you haven’t had breakfast at your hotel, Don Ruiz Coffee near El Morro is a nice option, with excellent coffee.
Spend the morning exploring El Morro and Castillo San Cristobal, two solid forts built by the Spanish to repel attacks on San Juan from the sea and from the land.

The forts are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with La Fortaleza, the governor’s mansion, Fortin San Juan de la Cruz (El Caรฑuelo), and a large portion of the old San Juan city wall that’s still standing.

Day 3 in Puerto Rico: Day trip to El Yunque, Luquillo Beach
Today you’ll head out of the city of San Juan to begin experiencing a couple of Puerto Rico’s natural wonders: El Yunque National Forest and Luquillo Beach.
El Yunque and Luquillo make for one of the easiest and best day trips from San Juan.
Morning
El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the US national forest system. It features breathtaking scenery, a wide variety of flora and fauna, and lots of opportunities for recreation.

Step into the visitor center, El Portal, to get information on activities suited to the skills and interests of your group. Pick up maps and unique souvenirs and learn more about the forest.
Apart from the scenic drive through El Yunque, and the views from the Yokahu Tower, there are many trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels to tackle.
Some trails lead to waterfalls and natural pools, and if you wear your swimsuit under your clothes, you can enjoy a dip or even swing on a rope swing if you choose!
Birdwatchers should definitely bring binoculars or a zoom lens — there are dozens of species of birds to spot at El Yunque. And listen for the call of the famous coqui frog!

๐ Small-Group El Yunque Rainforest Vivid Day Tour with Transport Delve into the heart of El Yunque on this small-group tour, featuring hikes to waterfalls and panoramic vistas. Highly rated for its intimate setting and expert guides.
Afternoon
Luquillo Beach is just a short drive from El Yunque.

Luquillo Beach offers parking and amenities, perfect for a few hours of fun on the sand. It’s a lifeguarded beach and you can swim if conditions are calm.
Luquillo is also famous for its food kiosks. Stop to enjoy the ambience and sample local treats like alcapurrias or bacalaitos.
If you have a rental car, you can drive to El Yunque and Luquillo. If not, consider a guided tour like this one, which offers transport from San Juan hotels and stops in El Yunque, Luquillo Beach, and the Luquillo Kiosks.

Day 4: Explore Culebra or Vieques
Did you know that Puerto Rico is an archipelago and there are smaller Puerto Rican islands that you can explore?
In fact, a day trip to one of the offshore islands is one of the most exciting things you can do. Here we explore Culebra and Vieques, the two larger islands, but you can also choose a boat tour to Icacos for a third option.
Culebra is a Caribbean gem. It is home to Playa Flamenco, often listed as one of the top beaches on the planet. It features dazzling white sands and unbelievable aqua waters.

But Culebra has other gorgeous beaches as well, like Tamarindo Beach and Punta Soldado. Swimming and snorkeling are top activities in Culebra.
In fact, Culebra is one of the top places to snorkel in Puerto Rico.
๐ Culebra Snorkeling Tour by Catamaran from Fajardo Sail to the pristine beaches of Culebra Island aboard a catamaran, then snorkel in crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life. This full-day excursion is lauded for its stunning locations and professional crew.
Vieques is a larger island and many visitors choose to spend a night or two here, although it’s also a great day trip destination.
Vieques is known for its remote beaches, wild horses, and laid back ambience.
Esperanza is a nice beach town on Vieques worth strolling, with shops and eateries, and a large beach that’s walking distance.
If you are mobile, you should also explore the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, where you will find a series of pristine secluded beaches to spend a few hours.
Green Beach, La Chiva, Caracas, La Plata are all great options. Also stop by Playa Negra, which is a black sand beach.

To get to Culebra or Vieques, you can take the ferry from Ceiba Ferry Terminal, or you can fly. Rent a Jeep (in Vieques) or a Jeep or golf cart (on Culebra) to get around on the island.
You can also visit Culebra on a guided catamaran tour. This popular tour has the option to also choose transport from San Juan to the ferry terminal and back.
๐๏ธ Explore the wonders of El Yunque Rainforest on this half-day tour, featuring scenic hikes and natural waterslides. Ideal for those seeking a shorter yet immersive nature experience.
Day 5: Ponce and the South Coast
Ponce, on the south shore of Puerto Rico, is a delightful destination to include in your itinerary for Puerto Rico.
The historic center of Ponce is walkable, and home to many famous sights.
The Ponce Cathedral, officially Catedral de Nuestra Seรฑora de Guadalupe, is a stunning sight, with tall twin towers and an interior that features a main altar built in Burgos in Spain.

Take photos of the striking red facade of the Parque de Bombas, wander the Plaza de las Delicias, and browse the many museums, including the impressive Museo de Arte de Ponce.
The Castillo Serralles, set high on a hill overlooking the city, is a must-tour. Also take in the views from the Cruceta del Vigia!
In the evening, head to La Guancha, a very lively spot by the water with lots of eateries and live music on some nights.
If you have a car and start early, you can spend part of your day in the city of Ponce and then drive along the south coast to enjoy some of the beautiful beaches and small towns like San German.

๐๏ธ Icacos Island All-Inclusive Snorkel and Boat Tour Enjoy a day of sun and sea on this all-inclusive tour to Icacos Island, featuring snorkeling, beach relaxation, and refreshments.
Day 6: Cabo Rojo + Rincon
Today you are headed for the gorgeous west coast of Puerto Rico, famous for its spectacular sunsets and beautiful beaches.
Along the way, stop to explore the Cabo Rojo area, where you will find windswept beaches and spectacular rock formations. This is one of the “wilder” parts of the island, perfect if you enjoy exploring the outdoors.
Among the popular photo spots in Cabo Rojo, the salt flats here feature reddish-pink water. Another must-visit spot is the Puente de Piedra, a natural stone bridge in the water.

On the west coast, Rincon is a charming town, with an array of beaches and a walkable downtown.
Stop by the Punta Higuera Lighthouse, which is over 100 feet tall and is still functional. The park at the lighthouse is a nice place to enjoy as well.
Domes Beach, located near the lighthouse, is one of Rincon’s most popular surfing beaches.

Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, which contains Steps Beach, Por Fin Dogman’s Beach, and Little Malibu, is great for snorkeling in the summer. You can stroll or relax on the sand. In the winter months, though, the surf can get massive, so beware.
In town, you will find souvenir shops and art galleries to browse, and many eateries. Often there is live music to enjoy in the evenings.

Getting to Puerto Rico
Where is Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico is a US island territory located between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean.
Puerto Rico is about 1,000 miles southeast of Miami, Florida.

Flying into Puerto Rico
The vast majority of visitors to Puerto Rico arrive by air, generally flying into San Juan International Airport, officially the Luiz Munoz Marin Airport.
Not as popular, there are two other international airports in Puerto Rico: Rafael Hernandez Airport in Aguadilla and Mercedita Airport in Ponce.
Many airlines fly into Puerto Rico from airports across the USA and around the world, so finding flights is not an issue.
๐ข Dive into the clear waters off San Juan to snorkel alongside sea turtles and vibrant marine life. This guided tour includes underwater videos, capturing your unforgettable encounters.
You can fly to San Juan from Miami in under 2.5 hours, from Boston in about four hours, and from Chicago in just under five hours. Flights from the west coast take longer and usually involve a layover.
If you plan to take the puddle jumper from San Juan to Vieques or Culebra during your stay in Puerto Rico, you can usually book those flights when you book your main flights in and out of San Juan.
For US citizens and permanent residents, the flight to Puerto Rico is a domestic flight and you do not need to go through immigration or customs.
Arriving on an Ocean Cruise
Puerto Rico is a popular stop on many Caribbean cruises.
In San Juan, the cruise ship terminal is right by Old San Juan, and you can walk off the ship and into the historic quarter to explore.
Ponce is a lesser visited cruise stop, but if you are on a cruise with Ponce as a stop, you will love exploring this historic second city in the south of the island.
๐ LED Kayak Night Glow Tour in Condado Lagoon Experience the magic of kayaking at night in a clear-bottom kayak illuminated by LED lights. Paddle through Condado Lagoon, observing marine life beneath you.
Structuring Your Puerto Rico Itinerary: Road Trip or Day Trips?
While Puerto Rico is one of the larger Caribbean islands, it is still small enough that you can base in San Juan and explore more of the island on day trips from San Juan.
So if you dislike packing and unpacking multiple times on your vacation, or you are not inclined to get a rental car, day trips are the option for you.
But you will have more flexibility if you explore the island on a road trip, with bases in San Juan, Fajardo, Ponce, and Rincon.
Of course, this entails some loss of time checking in and out of multiple accommodations, and you have to be comfortable driving in Puerto Rico.

Getting Around in Puerto Rico
If you plan to explore the main island of Puerto Rico in depth, it is easiest to rent a car. It is a large island, and driving allows you to see and do so much more on your Puerto Rican vacation!
A rental car allows for great flexibility, allowing you to stop at a pretty beach or viewpoint along the way, and start and stop exploring when you want.
You may find that roads are less optimally maintained in Puerto Rico (think lots of potholes!), so be watchful. Also, distances are displayed in kilometers rather than miles, and gas prices in liters. Some roads have tolls.
